CRM 2011 on-premise migration to CRM Online

We are exploring migration of CRM 2011 on-premise to CRM online.  Reasons include feature upgrade, mobile support, multi-client support (now only IE).  We are an E3 customer and are also interested in future linkage with CRM/SP Online.  We are now spending far too much time on rollups and Outlook client plugin compatibility issues.

Background:

We're running a significantly customized CRM 2011 on-premise.  CRM customization's include:

  • Javascript built with a proprietary tool
  • Sync of contact, organization and other custom built entity records between CRM and our SharePoint 2010 public website
  • PDF invoice creation within CRM
  • Custom Support area with helpdesk functionality
  • High number of workflows and triggered email delivery from CRM

As a result of the customizations, we have a large amount of administrative tasks occurring on the CRM, e.g., staff updating/checking/setting properties on data that was synced from the website or is ready for consumption via webservices.  We also provide SOAP webservices that enable another website to consume our CRM (master) data.

Having said that, I'd like to have a  CRM experts opinion:

  1. Is migration to CRM Online possible for us?
  2. If so, what are the steps?
  3. Are there any restrictions?

Many thanks,

Ara

    Hi,

Agreed with Sott, you can surly do that but not an easy task.

Regarding with the extension almost all the things that you can in on premise can be done in online as well, but you need to understand when you will be hosing your code into Microsoft server, it can't run on full trust, so you have limited resource to access in your code, if you have custom web application, you can host them in windows azure or host them in your environment but need make sure they are deployed on secured port and available to extrnet.

I will also suggest you to go through below link which explain difference between online and on premise, so you will have better idea about what you can do easily and what can't be done:

Hi, as you are currently using CRM 2011 and you want to upgrade to CRM Online (latest version), you can do it. I think you can first migrate to CRM 2013 (Test environment) and then to CRM Online.

In CRM Online, plugins are registered in sandbox mode and there are some JavaScript functions which works fine in CRM 2011 but not in CRM 2013, 2015 or Online. Hence, you may need to modify the code. Also, you need to convert all SQL-based reports to Fetch-XML based reports. Another thing is that you can make use of the new features introduces in CRM 2013, 2015 or Online. You need to consider integration with other systems if any.

Possible? Yes - Easy? I suspect not!

The main issues you will have (other than unsupported code no longer working) will be the sandbox restrictions of CRM Online. So any code that requires access to the SQL database (e.g. reports and integrations) will need re-writing to use the Web Services.

I would recommend engaging a Dynamics CRM partner/expert to do an upgrade assessment that will identify all the components that will need work so that you can get an idea of the cost.

    Good luck!
