retainers

My client sells furniture and offers design services to its customers/prospects. If the customer asks for design services, the store requests a  non-refundable retainer that will be applied against any purchases that are made.  Alternatively, if the customer opts not to purchase any products, they can keep the design portfolio for their own use.

Does anyone have any experience with implementing this type of transaction?

I have the same question (0)

I have used these with a previous ERP where you could create a retainer invoice and apply the cash, but it would hold the credit on the job until it was used and you could apply it to future invoices.  My thought for BC if I am not using the Jobs module would be to create a cash receipt and maybe use a dimension for a project/job if needed.  You would then have a credit for the customer and if they do decide to use the design company that credit can be used for future invoices.  If they decide not to then you create a invoice for the full amount and apply the credit because it then becomes revenue.

Hopefully this will give you some ideas.

    Hello,

Adding to Tanya's reply... Your scenario sounds like you are using Jobs. In Jobs you can create a retainer Invoice as one of the billable Tasks/Planning Lines. If you are not using Jobs and this does not sound like a pre-payment since it is non-refundable, then I would consider creating a Non-Refundable Invoice so that you document the transaction against the Customer. You can then apply the receipt of the retainer and it appears on the Customers account.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve
