Dynamics AX 2012: error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" with Excel AddIn

We have an installation of AX 2012 beta with every tier on its own machine. When Excel is called on the client-machine and we click on "Connection" we get a popup with the error message "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". When we do the same on the application server machine it works. The office add ins are installed on both machines.

    Hello Huzaifa,

    thanks for your reply!

I think you mean File->Tools->Options->General->Miscellaneous->Export to Microsoft Excel->Remote Desktop Session exports to!? I've changed the setting here from "Client Excel" to "Server Excel". With no effect unfortunately. Excel is still started on the client machine, independently if I log on via rdp to the client machine and call AX there or if I call it from the browser via Remote Desktop Services/RemoteApp programs. Consequently the link between AX and Excel doesn't work still and I get the errormessage described in my initial posting.

    Regards

    Patrick

Attach visual studio debugger to the excel process and try to reproduce the error. Enable the clr exception. Stack Trace can give us information why it is happening

Now I've managed at last to install VS on the machine concerned and to get the debugger working. Result:

    1) "Details"-window

    System.NullReferenceException occurred

    Hi there,

I'm getting the same error when I try to launch the Dynamics AX > Connection via Excel Add-in. Any idea how to troubleshoot this one? This is a single computer install wherein I have loaded all the components on the same box and this is the first time I'm trying to bring up the Add-in. Any special configuration needs to be done to make this work?

    Cheers,

    Dilip

    Before uninstalling try this

Can you please try going to the connection tab of the client configuration utility and pressing the "Refresh Configuration" button on a client that does not work?

    Hello Huzifa,

do you mean the AX office addins? For office we haven't installed a service pack. We have installed Office 2010 32-bit, the OS is WIndows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1 64-bit.

    Regards

I've copied the Original configuration to be able to press the "Refresh" button. Then I have pressed the "Refresh" button, the poup saying that the WCF confugration is regenerated appeared. When it dissapeared I closed the configuration utility. The errormessage does still appear however.

I think installing service pack for office will resolve the problem
