Setting up a GP development server

Good morning,

I am creating a GP development server, and have setup en SQL server and ran the GP client installation, with the installation of sample company, so the sql DB structure has been setup, and i can start the client and select the sample company.

Now i need to move some of the production companies over to our development server, which i of course can easily do with just a backup and restore. However the hart op GP is the dynamics databse, can I (or do i need to) restore that from production to development as well?

I assume since the GP client is the one that creates the connection to the development server (its is physically installed on that specific server and pointed to it) i can move the database from production to dev safely without causing any harm to production?

Last but not least: I am not worried about all the users on the production server, there is only one user that is not SA that would need the access and i can easily re-create that.

    Hi Hans!

Typically when I move the production databases to a test or development server, I just restore the backups of all the production databases (including DYNAMICS).

Then when installing the GP client on the test/development server, make sure to create a new OBDC connection to the test server.

After that, everything just works in test/development. You won't cause any harm to production.

    I hope this helps.

RE: Setting up a GP develop[emt server

If I were setting up a test server, I would install SQL and then install GP and run GP Utilities going as far as creating the DYNAMICS database.

I would then copy over the databases.

Finally I would create a GP package file in the event that workstations would be involved in the testing process.

There are other steps involved so following KB 878449 is a good idea.

RE: Setting up a GP development server

    Hi All,

After trying, this doesnt seem to work form me. The moment i restore the Dynamics production database and one of the companies on my dev server, GP stops working with an error: FP: Bad component offset.from:80 wind: 1fld:14 when i try to login , as soon as i try to login to the company i copied accross.

Is there perhaps a rights problem I need to manually correct on either the Dynamics DB or the DB of the company i copied over?

GP Utils wont run either anymore , with an error:  The stored procedure VerifyVersionInfromation() of from duSQLInstall Pass Through SQL reteurned the following reults: DBMS: 468, microfosft dynamics GP:0

Are you sure you are matching the correct version of GP? It sounds like the version of GP you installed is older than the version of your GP databases.Go back to your working copy and click About GP off the question mark in the upper right-hand corner. Then apply the matching GP service pack.

I just checked, the versions are exactly the same.

I did read someting last night about sort order that has to be the same as well on a database server level? I am not quite sure if that could be the issue here? (I think thats set during installation of sql?)  , now would i know how to check and even correct that.

    Any help is much appreciated

    Cheers

    Hans

You can run this SELECT statement to determine the collation sequence.

    SELECT CONVERT (varchar, SERVERPROPERTY('collation')) AS 'Server Collation';

Most likely SQL was installed with the default collation sequence. Changing can be done but it is an involved process.

RE: Setting up a GP development server

There seems to be a minute difference, see below

    Production:

    SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS

    Dev

    Latin1_General_CI_AS

Only the SQL_ is missing from Dev

PS we have an old deve server (which im replacing), and that also has SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS..So I'm thinking that must be it?

RE: Setting up a GP development server

    Latin1_General_CI_AS is Latin1-General, case-insensitive, accent-sensitive, kanatype-insensitive, width-insensitive

    and

    SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS is  Latin1-General, case-insensitive, accent-sensitive, kanatype-insensitive, width-insensitive for Unicode Data, SQL Server Sort Order 52 on Code Page 1252 for non-Unicode Data

They are not the same. I would uninstall GP and SQL from the Dev server and this time install SQL with the default SQL Collation sequence which is SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS. Then install GP and copy and restore databases.

RE: Setting up a GP development server

I reinstalled sql with the correct collation, but still ran into issues though.

Order of operations seems to be the key here.

Joseph Markovich's answer was the one that worked for me in the end. Install SQl, restore the DB's inc dynamic and lastly run the GP installer.

The caveat of the collation is an important one though!

    Thanks for all the help!
