Why does AX 2012 R3 allow users to create multiple address records per warehouse?
What functionality does this provide?
We are sending warehouse and address to an external subsystem and the dev wants to know which address to send. You can set one as primary, which we are going to send, but wondering what is the use of multiple addresses?
Hi,
The warehouse address, if specified, will be used as the postal address to which vendors should deliver items on a Purchase order. If your warehouse has multiple address in AX, you can select anyone of these address on the Purchase order. The purchase order confirmation paperwork will direct the vendor to deliver to the address you chose.
It's only informational.
Incase you have warehouse overflow building and it's right next to your warehouse, you can still designate the building as same warehouse but use a different address to direct the PO's there. Having multiple warehouse addresses, you can select appropriate one on the purchase order.
Another usage will be if you have dedicated dock for certain vendors, you can add dock as part of address and select that on PO creation.

The customer does have multiple addresses, and we are going to code to send only the primary address to the sub system.
I was just wondering why AX allows multiple - is there any functionality
It might not be used in any functionality, instead just information that is stored.
Does your customer have multiple addresses for a warehouse? If not, then there should not be any problem, right?
And even if they had, you could integrate just the primary one, if the other system requires exactly one address.
Thank you for your answer.
I can understand the practical uses i.e. big warehouse over two streets, what I don't understand is any functionality of multiple addresses inside AX.
You can't stock inventory at a different addresses.
You can't link a location inside a warehouse to a different address.
Why would you enter multiple addresses?
I can easily assume a large warehouse that is in crossroads of two streets. One entrance, for large goods, is on one street, and another dock for small goods is on the other. However there's always exactly one primary address.
If your external system can handle only one address, you should send the primary address. Or discuss with your customer.
