Looking to remove the en-US from the URL which is automatically added.
The portal app has a single language (and to my knowledge never had additional languages) however the language code still gets added to the URL.
How can I remove that?

I have reproduced your problem. When the portal was first created, there was no language code suffix, which appeared when I added a language.
This process occurs in many applications and may be irreversible unless you can edit the web code.
If you must remove it, it is recommended that you recreate a same portal with no check “Use data from existing website record”.
