Upgrading to GP 18.2 from GP 2018

I have been testing installing and upgrading to GP 18.2 from GP 2018. It immediately comes up and says do you want to upgrade the existing instance of GP or install a new instance. This tells me that GP 18.2 thinks it is GP 2018. Normally you would not get such a choice. Creating a new instance works just fine. However, updating the existing instance does nothing. It does not load the new chunk files nor update the DEX.INI file or any of the files. The best you can do is to select to remove GP 2018 and then run the installation over again. This time since it does not sense an existing instance all proceeds as it should. Has anyone else experienced this? I have had a rush of these due to our payroll clients who need to go to GP 18.2 for their payroll year-end.

Thanks Lisa, this is what happens when you have been doing GP upgrades for 20+ years. You see they announce the next release and you assume that is is an upgrade just like all the others. By the way, you know what happens when you assume. Thinking that GP was an upgrade and not just a service pack makes all the difference in the world. Thanks to eagle eyes like you and Jen I now fully understand what is going on here. Personally I have this mental affliction where if I see GP code in a GP 2018 folder I would be disturbed.

Richard - Any GP 2018 service pack since the Fall (for example, year-end update) is going to upgrade the client to GP 18.2.  It does change the splash screen from GP 2018 to Dynamics GP (no number) and the About window references the new 18.2 numbering scheme.  Those payroll clients are going to just need the GP year-end update.  Jen posted a block on this exact issue.  (It is the same for CDN and US:  community.dynamics.com/.../canadian-payroll-2019-year-end-update.)

Lisa, do you mean 4520496 is a complete installation of GP 18.2? That would explain why the upgrade is behaving the way it is. I was trying to avoid the confusion of having GP 2020(aka GP 18.2) sit in a folder called GP 2018. How did you learn of this service pack?

This got me too when I first tested the upgrade.  The trick for updating the GP 2018 instance is to use Service Pack KB 4520496 (or later) and not the DVD image.

Procedurely, I haven't figured out how we are going to deal with the two ways to get to 18.2.  (If a client is on GP 2018 and we go to GP 18.2, we have inconsistencies with a client who goes from GP 2016 to GP 18.2.)
