I'm trying to run a detailed report showing all debits and credits in a specific GL account during the year. How do I run a basic report in Dynamics?

You run a simple trial balance from the reports tool bar at the top of application.
Just click Reports >> Financial >> Trial Balance
Then select default and modify and from there you can choose your account, date range, subtotals and a few other options as well as where to print whether you want it to print just to the screen or a file or a printer or all three.
Hopefully this helps, there are always more than one way to do what you're asking for.
A SmartList would also work, but the above way is a starting point.
As well as the TB Tom mentions, you can also use an Account Transactions SmartList; the Search button third from the left allows you to set filters and restrict the return on both the Account Number and also date (you could eitherset this to a between Start of Fiscal Year and End of Fiscal Year or use Open Year = 2015).
Trial balance seems to be the frequent option for such inquiry. Although, the account transaction smart list is a considerable option for listing down all transactions.
Moreover, you can consider the management reporter to create a TB as well for all your GL accounts.
