We are planning to move from Business Central 365 to a on-premise solution, because of slow performance

Hi,

we went online with 365BC september 2020, and this has been a bad experience for us, as performance compared to our old on-premise is very bad.

Our Microsoft IT-supplier told us that Microsoft would give us more speed / move us on faster servers automatically. When this did not happen, we asked for and ran a performance test with Microsoft, and Microsoft concluded that the necessary Item extensions created by our partner was slowing us down.

These item extensions are regular extensions like dropshipment details, price matrix, etc., as we've had in the old navision for many years, running without issues. We have about 3.000 clients and 35.000 items, and just to look up on our item list, or perhaps create a sales order takes litterally seconds for each movement/look up. Nobody can work like this, so we need to change system (again) :(

So - long story short, Microsoft denied moving us to faster servers, so now we are starting to plan our move from this SAAS cloud version and back to an on-premise solution. This movemebt will be very time consuming and expensive for us. But right now I have de-motivated staff and I had to hire extra staff in order to keep up with our normal demand from our customers.

anybody who have a similar experience? it feels like we are going backwards and not forward... ?

3000 clients and 35000 items isn't a huge ask by volume.

Many partners going from Classic On-Prem C/AL to Extension AL on SaaS can get the job done, but struggle to get the job done well.  It may very well be an honest effort, but not knowing some of the critical pitfalls - I'm not saying your partner is "at fault", but that sounds like a knowledge gap more than a technical fault.

I'm not sure if you've already had a 2nd opinion partner/independent developer do a code review?  If not, you absolutely should before investing in other directions.

A good specialist partner can also take the same extensions, apply them to an on-prem copy, and perform deep performance analysis at a SQL level.

Please let me know if you want help with arranging that.  I'm pretty easy to find.

I wouldn’t compare older versions of Dynamics NAV and Business Central with the current versions (15+). Especially Windows and Web Client. It is like comparing gasoline and electric cars. Sure they have four wheels and both have advantages and disadvantages, but they work differently under the hood. This is also the case for Business Central.

If I were you, I would create a production copy as sandbox. There you can check if the performance is better despite less power of sandboxes. If the performance is still bad you could uninstall the non Microsoft extensions on Extension Management and look if the system is as fast as expected for a Web Client ERP System. If not your local network or internet access might not good enough for a cloud ERP System.

If uninstalling fixes all performance issues then I would speak to my partner to figure out how to fix this issues. Microsoft Support can also help your Partner.

thank you for taking your time to replay - I am planning a second opinion on the special coding on extensions, in order to see if small changes can be made that would make a difference for us?

    Hello,

Thank you Mr. Vyska / Mr. Göhler. Good to meet you here as well in communities.

    @TBDenmark:

If you can send me a direct message via communities with the case number that was raised with Microsoft Support via your IT supplier on your behalf, we can have a look at our side what happened at our side.

    Thanks.

    Hi Marco,

thank you for looking into this - I am all new to this, how do I send you a direct message? and is it the "TrackingID" that you want?

You can host Dynamics 365 Business Central in the cloud, it is the most preferable choice for Dynamics 365 Business Central users. The Cloud version of Business Central is not as flexible and adaptable as the On-Premise version, but you can, however, develop or buy so-called Extensions. Extensions are plugins you use to customize the solution, but without changing the basic code itself. Therefore, Extensions are finished solutions, not real adjustments.

    Key Features:

    Access to Add-Ons through App-Source

Tight integration with other cloud products

    Fast Implementation

Supports applications and tools built on the universal Power platform

Zero new license costs and no recurring license renewal expenses with a predictable monthly subscription

    High availability and disaster recovery

    Data backups

I hope this information will be helpful!

    Hi Marco,

I have received your answer - and I can see that Microsoft still believes our performance issues are down to database locking on item extensions? We are now trying to remove this locking, and see if this will increase our speed?

The main reason for moving away from SAAS is simply the overall slowness. I can not see what database locking on item extensions has to do with 10 seconds waiting time to open a debitor list or a debitor card? We handle many customers on a day-by-day basis, so we need to look up clients and products instantly. Maybe Business Central 365 is build for smaller companies than us?

We will create a test-enviroment for the scheduled on-premise move targeted at beginning of March. We hope and believe that the many seconds wait for normal tasks will go away, once we are on-premise again?

Thank you Marco for looking into this once again, I hope we can and will solve these performance issues. We are open to pretty much everything, but as it looks right now we can see that this SAAS solution is perhaps not suitable for our wholesale/B2B business?
