Hi.
I want to create a workflow that sends an email to the owner of the contact record when the birthday field meets the actual date.
i.e. Birthday: 19/10/1987
Send email to owner: 19/10/2016... this should recur annually.
Can someone help with this process?

However keeping a workflow in wait condition impacts the performance of the system in a long term.
I would suggest create scheduler/windows job , which will run at specific time every day and trigger the birthday workflow to send email.
Best Approach ( From Performance Respective ).
1. Create a Custom On-Demand Workflow with the email template. ( Creating Email Template will give you more control of editing template)
2. Pass Contact Input Parameter in this Custom Workflow.
3. Create a Console Application to get List of Contacts which having birthday equal to today date. Pass the Contact to Workflow Input Parameter.
