Challenge! Can connect to created database - Cannot connect to restored databases??

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

This is killing me.

Computer is a HP rp5800 running windows 7 32 bit, MS Dynamics Point of Sale 2.0

All is well but I am unable to connect to the restored - up to date - database on this new computer.

No problem connecting to a created database.  Connecting to the old computer shows the same symptoms; able to connect to a created database but unable to connect to a restored database!

The error when selecting a restored database is, "Unable to connect to specific database."  Details, "Cannot open database 'xxxx' requested by the login.  The login failed.  Login failed for user, 'computer name\username'.

If I select a created database on the same computer everything works fine with the exact same credentials??

HUGE thanks to anyone who can help on this, I am stumped.

    SQL Studio 2016?

Was the database created and backed up using SQL 2016 Express?

How did we get from RMS 2.0 to POS 2009 in the same forum post exactly?

Both POS 2.0 and POS 2009 uses windows authenication only.  Also, the usernames are stored as security objects in the database server and are created when you use POS 2.0 to either create or restore the database.   The POS program will also make matching Windows user accounts that usually start with R#_ and end with a number.

You can not use SQL Server Management Studio to either create or restore POS 2.0 or 2009 databases.

You have to use the builtin restore method.   You would then pick the "use the restored database" option at the end of the restore.   This will then make all the necessary changes.

On the stations, You can also use the "Change Connection" option on the login screen.

Also, you can not use Practice Mode databases unless you are already operating in Practice Mode.  And the account you used to install POS 2.0 needs to be an admin on all computers running POS 2.0, otherwise you wont be able to change the connection.  This is needed since those special user accounts would have to be created or changed, and you have to be an admin on both the server and station or those accounts can not be created.

    Update.

I am able to access all databases with MS Server SQL Studio 2016.

When I try to access a restored database with MS Dynamics Point of Sale 2009 the error log gives, "Error 18456 Severity 14 State 16".  This is with the exact same credentials that work perfectly when trying to access a created database.

Doesn't make sense to me, but I know 'sa' uses different rights/privileges, so who knows? Worth a try. In RMS, you have to use SQL connectivity to work, so I never try Windows authority

Thanks John, I haven't tried with SQL authentication.  Would it make sense that I can connect to created databases with windows but not restored databases?

It sounds like you are connecting with Windows authentication. Have you tried with SQL authentication ('sa' account)?

    Thanks for the reply Ed.

I have the exact username and password where the database resides and it has administrator privilege.

If I wish to connect to a created database it works just fine.  Attempting to connect to a restored database using the exact same credentials to the same computer fails with the detailed error, "Cannot open database 'XXX' requested by the login.  The login failed.  Login failed for user 'Computer Name/Username'.

Both databases - created and restored - were created on the computer where the database resides.

I can get the database onto the new computer - I just cannot connect to it with the other computer.  The pull down menu shows all the databases on the new computer, and will connect to the created ones, but not the restored one with all the data??

Thanks to ANYONE who can help.

You need to have the same exact username & password on the computer where the database resides.  It has to be an administrator type account.
