Microsoft Dynamics GP (Archived)

auto-complete in the financials series

Posted on by 275

Hello,

I am currently using Microsoft Dynamics GP10 at work and am wondering if there is a way to have auto-complete in the financials series? I ask this because the account numbers we use are 10 digits long and often times, 9 of the 10 digits should be zero when I am making an entry. Can those 9 digits auto fill so I don't have to type them in?  Someone mentioned the following three options:

You could write a macro that you can execute with a hot key (like F2)

You could use VBA to programmatically change it.

You could use a nickname (alias) for the account.

Can anyone please tell me more about these or offer new suggestions.

Thank you,

Esther

Leslie has some good perspectives.  Let me expand a bit on the Alias response.  I am a "nothing special" kind of person and alias's are built into the program while macros and VBA require "custom" coding that can get lost or present update issues.  (Yes, Leslie, I said "can"  not "will")

The alias needs to be added to those accounts you frequently use and need to be simple and easily remembered.  For example, you could use CSH for the main cash account.  You hit Control+Q and then type CSH and the entire cash account is copied into your account number field.  Yes, it is not as easy as the auto-fill but you can use it the FIRST time you use an account as well!

We discuss this in our soon to be released MS Dynamics GP Financial manual.  Watch our site ( http:\\www.AccoladePublications.com )

    Hi Esther,

Looks like you have some pretty good advice!

Looking over the options from the 'I'm not a VBA programmer' standpoint, the macro with hot key is where I would go. The reason I would choose that one is because it's only one keystroke, F2 (or whatever)

The nickname method requires two keystrokes. You have to select CTRL+Q.

VBA is cool if you own the Modifier module and you know how to do it.

    That's my two cents.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
