Dynamics Retail Management System ( RMS ) 1.2 to 2.0 upgrade

Hello,

Currently the system is set up with main (back office) pc holding all of the database information and another POS pc out front performing POS operations. I am currently in possestion of a 2.0 disk and would like to upgrade. I am wondering how i would go about the upgrade. Do i just put the disk in the machine and let it update itself? Do I have to uninstall v1.2 first? How do i keep all of my databses (customer) so that they will show up in v2.0? If i do the backup in v1.2 can that be read by the v2.0 software?

Thank you!

mgetson, If you are at all computer literate you shouldn't have any problems doing it yourself. It's really not much different than installing any other software, although there are a few things you should do to prep yourself for the upgrade. First save any and all custom reports, receipts, status bars, or anything else you had customized to a different folder. The upgrade will get rid of all of them so you will need to put them back when you're done. If you're using MSDE you will need to upgrade that to SQL 2005 Express as well. It's not a big deal though, because the 2.0 install disc will do it for you. Allow it to create using all the defaults and make sure you write down the sa password you select because you will need it anytime you want to connect to the database in Administrator. The install will automatically go to installing 2.0 from there. There is no need to delete the old version of RMS the install will do it for you. Again, just let it work with all the default settings. As far as the database goes, backup before you start the upgrade like you normally would, and then after you are done upgrading to 2.0 and installing all the service packs(there are 3) you will create the database in Administrator from your backup using all default settings. When it's done creating the database you go back to the tab where create database is located and click on upgrade database and select 2.1 . When that's done, go to configure under the file tab, still working in administrator, put in the name of your server, the sa password, and the database name. Click on test database connection to make sure everything's right, save the configuration, and your done with that. When you go to POS the first time it will ask you for the license number that came with the 2.0 install disk, enter it and your done. As long as you're not upgrading all your peripherals at the same time it's pretty straight forward. Adding new hardware complicates it a bit, but if you setup 1.2 you shouldn't have any problems with this one since with most new equipment it's all plug-n-play. Good luck. Craig

     Mgeston,

Just consider your time and energy you have to put in before you do this yourself.  Sometime it is be more effective, beneficial, and economical to hire a professional (in this case your RMS partner) to do the upgrade than doing it yourself.  After what you are good at and specialize in is your business and customers.  The time you will spend doing the upgrade yourself can be used towards your business to make more sales.

     Just my 2 cents.

Good luck however you decide to proceed.

Very true Shawn. Everyone has to know their own limitations. But since he was asking for help, and not the phone number of someone to do it for him, I thought I'd share with him how it's worked for me before. These guys that just get on here to post their info without offering any real help need to buy some ads somewhere else, this board isn't meant to be free classifieds. These forums are meant to ask for help, and if you are kind enough to share your wisdom then offer the help and you'll get our thanks. No one here needs any more phone numbers to call for paid support. We all have enough of them. There are many partners that frequent this board, and others, to offer their knowledge to those of us that choose to do what we can on our own. I very much appreciate them and all they do to make things better for all of us. I'll climb down from my soap box now. Craig
