How to register investments

Hello,

I am a bit worried that this might be a very dumb question, but for the love of me I cannot get out of this "minor" issue. I would like to post the initial investment of a startup, as well as subsequent investments as new shareholders step into the company, in Business Central. I cannot find a way to do this.

My background is programming, so my understanding of accounting and finance is limited to the basics (balance sheet, income statement).

I have the same question (0)

Hopefully one of the forum members has direct experience with handling this scenario. I don't but I am willing to chip in with some suggestions.

    1. Discuss this with an accountant of the business

    2. If the investment is being made by your company then it is an asset of the business so use the fixed asset module. You may want to setup a specific dimension for tracking this and an appropriate class so it posts to a specific part of the balance sheet.

    3. If new shareholders enter the business that is a capital investment but the shares themselves are an asset for the person. A company wouldn't typically record that through their accounting system but you would record the amount of money invested. A dimension for this is another useful tool as you will be able to assess further down the line how much was invested and then apportion that to the current value of the business if a shareholder were to sell for example.

Worth considering that Fixed Assets can have budgets that run in parallel so future investments could be tracked before they take place: docs.microsoft.com/.../fa-how-manage-budgets

This might not be your final answer but hopefully it gets the conversation going.

    Thanks, Josh

    Hello,

As an Accountant your initial Investments are recorded in BC as follows:

Shareholder A gives 10,000 dollars investment into Company. The entry is:

    Debit - Cash G/L Account 10001 - $10,000

     Credit - Equity Section (Investment Shareholders) G/L Account 30002 - ($10,000)

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Hi, I agree with Steve that this should be dealt with directly in accounting.

You can create a new dimension called shareholders to record details.

    Hope this will help.

    Thanks.
