Hi all,I have an AX 2012 R3 dynamics system installed on windows server 2012 r2.
Does OS update affect AX service?
Thanks for your help.

Which component do you have installed there? What kind of update do you want to apply? How to you define "to affect"? For example, if you have to restart the server after updating it during the night, is it "affecting AX service"?
@Martin
I'm wondering about whether to update the OS. I changed the table structure of AX so I do not want to update the AX (I fear when updating AX, all modifications in the database are lost)
Could you answer my questions, please? Start with the first one: which AX components (e.g. database or AOS) do you have installed on the server?
Then take the second question: what kind of update do you want to install? It shouldn't be surprising that different updates have different impact to various components.
In either case, OS updates won't delete your data from database (although some updates, or their installation process, may make your DB server unavailable).
Please realize that we don't have any information about your system and intentions except of what you tell us.
By the way, isn't this thread about the same question as your other thread, Will AX update remove customizations?. If so, let's lock this thread and more the discussion there, as there are more replies than here.
- AX components installed include: AOS, Database, Web server, BI.
- The type of update that I'm referring to is the windows hotfix update.
I want to know that when updating OS patches, but not AX updates, does AX still work correctly?. So hope everyone give advice, solution on this issue.
There isn't a single universal answer for all possible hotfixes. In general, OS updates usually don't have much impact to either to these things, but it really depends.
Nowadays we are using virtualisation to run the servers. Virtualisation technologies allows us to take a snapshot of the virtual machine state, that could be restored to that point in time if something goes wrong. Companies in a production environment typically take Database backups, and VM snapshots before touching a system in any ways, including a Windows update. That allows them to go back if something does not work out.
Patches can affect a system, especially if it involves components that AX is using. I have seen .Net Framework update failing which then crashed the AOS. Consider the above when you'd like to update your system.
