GP 2010 Upgrade Options

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi all,

I'm hoping that someone can make a recommendation or share a good / bad experience with an upgrade.  I'm currently running GP2010 on Windows 2003 R2 and SQL Server 2005 with 5 Users.  We want to upgrade to GP2013 at least but I would like to make other changes at the same time so here is where we are now...

Microsoft Hyper-V vm running Windows 2003 R2 (SP2) Standard Edition.  SQL Server 2005 (v 9.00.5069.00) Standard Edition.  GP 2010 (v 11.00.1752 (SP2)) {Dexterity 11.00.0349.000; Management Reporter 2.0.1700.66; Integration Manager 11.00.1767}

For obvious reasons I need to do some upgrades and where I would like to be is ...

Microsoft Hyper-V VM running Windows 2012 R2; SQL Server 2012; GP 2013

I'm open to recommendation for later versions of OS / SQL Server / GP suite based on availability and lack of horror stories.

QUESTION:  What is the best way to get there?

My first thought was to set up the VM with the stack outlined above and then "import" the database.  Is that a viable option or should I try another path?

I'm a network/computer/server guy with a couple years experience as a very basic DBM - and I plan on having our GP consultant assist.

Thought's?  and Thank You very much fro even reading this.

I agree with Richard, that is the way I have done this successfully in the past. Some other things to think about...

Are you using OLE Notes? Depending on which version of GP you end up on, you may lose them if you don't migrate to the newer Doc Attach feature. I believe the last version of GP that will allow you to convert is GP2015 R2.

There may be additional issues like this, so you will want to see if there are any known issues with upgrading to whichever version you eventually target.

I have done many upgrades even from the version lower then yours.

As per where your GP is now, I would advise you to create a bridging server that has sql server 2008 preferably R2, back up your databases from your current server and restore them to the bridging one. Install you GP 2010 R2 on that server and make sure you can login flawlessly. Then apply GP 2010 11.00.2044 (as Richard had mentioned) or above (I normally apply GP 2010 11.00.2197 ). If your GP reaches any of aforementioned versions, then migrate your databases to your new server (Microsoft Hyper-V VM running Windows 2012 R2; SQL Server 2012). Then make sure you have a copy GP2013 R2 installation. Install it on your new server and this will take you to GP 2013 R2.

If you want to go to GP 2016, then you need to apply to apply the fix to either of the following versions 12.0.1826,12.0.1894,12.0.1910,12.0.1920,12.0.2038 to your GP 2013 R2 so that once you install GP2016,the installation will move smoothly without incompatibility prompts.

    Good luck in your upgrade.

    Hi,

I have experienced some unknown errors when i performed the Environment Migration.

In my task, i installed GP2015 in 64 Bit Server and created multiple companies as per my client's need.

There were around 12 Entities i have created, and almost 10 Entities went fine but there were around 300 errors in remaining 2 entity creation, the issue is at the time of Utilities Execution for creating additional Company, the system is unable to locate several tables during Stored Procs creation and the configuration process stops there due to this.

As a workaround, i referred other DBs and manually executed those table Creation Queries which sorted out the issue.

    Thanks,

    Praveen

The simplest upgrade path is to apply GP 2010 11.00.2044 service pack to GP 2010 first. This will allow you to go directly to GP 2013 R2 and SQL 2012. Then if you want you could go to GP 2015 RTM and apply SP 14.00.0952. I have just done a couple of these with no issues. If you want to go all the way to GP 2016 then you could use SQL 2016.
