Trade Show Remote Access

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I am currently running Microsoft Dynamics RMS/POS.  I have an event upcoming and I would like to set up a booth with access to my inventory, and POS so I can sell items from the event.  Has anyone done this?  Do I need to purchase headquarters?  If no, how is this accomplished?

thanks in advance

-Lenny

While in offline mode, credit cards are fully authorized assuming that you have an internet connection. Offline mode does not save the cards for authorizing later. A quick way to test offline mode is to unplug the network cable from a register and then start the POS. It takes about 60 seconds but once the POS concludes that it can't reach the store database it will start in offline mode. Once it's in offline mode, plug the network cable back in. Then test some credit card transactions and you'll see that they're authorized. Restart the POS while the network cable is plugged in and you'll see the transactions get uploaded to the store database and the credit card transactions will be available for batching out. Lance

     Lance -

I appreciate your response, and through all my reading, I found this choice.  My main fear is that if I am taking credit cards, and I am ringing customers up in offline mode, does it authorize the credit card then or when I hook back up to my main system?  I don't want to take the chance of a credit card that is decline, but I won't know until I batch everything out.  This is how I understand this process, am I wrong?

If you have internet access at the show, you could try using some kind of remote control of your register, like VNC or RDC through a VPN tunnel, as long as you can get the receipts to print to a local printer.

The best way I have found to do this is to take one of your registers to the event and run it in offline mode. You run sales at the remote event and then when you plug back into your store network it uploads all transactions to the store database. Make sure the offline database is sync'ed up beforehand. There are several limitations while running in offline mode, namely the ability to add or edit customers. Assuming that speed of transactions is important I suggest that you disable the POS option "Force logon each sale". You might also want to enable printing receipts automatically after each transaction instead of being prompted. While in offline mode you can run credit card payments but have to wait until you upload transactions to the store database to be able to batch out. Lance
