CLOSING A YEAR

Posted on by 60

Hi, I am trying to close year 2009, but it looks like 2007 still open, and 2008 is closed.

They system shows year 2007 to be open, I try to close and it tells me that the following year must be open. I can not open 2008 because it it closed. How can I go back to close 2007 and then 2009.

    Sudin,

Good show! I had this happen to me and checking the box was what fixed it. Someone had set up a fiscal year that preceded a closed year to post some AP transactions.  Fortunately, no transactions were posted to the general ledger.

Here is an example using our favorite company, Fabrikam. The oldest year Fabrikam has set up is 2010 and 2010 is a closed year. You can set up 2009 using Fiscal Periods Setup and leave the year open (don't mark the 'historical year' checkbox). If you try to perform the financial year-end close it will bring up 2009 instead of 2014.

If someone has posted a GL entry to that old year, then we are back at Frank's answer.

Another thought, can the PSTL tool - Fiscal Period Modifier help?

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

SALLYE, Have you tried closing the 2007 from Fiscal Periods setup window? You could try in test company first. You can try to check mark "Historical Year" check box in the Fiscal Periods setup window. This method will not forward any balance to the subsequent years, but the system should recognize 2007 as closed.

    Best regards,
    SB

I think you're going to need to get in touch with MBS Professional Services for help on this one.  They'll have to re-open 2008 for you so you can close 2007.  You'll also want to know how 2008 was closed without 2007 being closed - that shouldn't happen.
