CRM 2013 - Sales Pipeline Report and Sales Stages

We are rolling out Dynamics CRM 2013 on-premise.  We have updated the OOB 'Opportunity Sales Process' business process flow; simply changing the display name of the of the stages.  We have also updated the OOB 'Stage Category' option set to reflect the name changes.  All seems well in both views, assuming I add the 'pipeline phase' field, and all seems well in the Dashboards/KPIs.

When I run the OOB Sales Pipleline report, all my sales stages are listed as 'Not Specified'.  I also notice if I add the 'Sales Stage' field to any views it is blank.  I see there is another option set called 'Opportunity Sales Stage' but it is listed as FALSE for customizable.  I assume this is the 'Sales Stage' field above that is showing up blank in both my views and the Sales Pipeline' report.

So I guess 2 questions:

1.  How would you go about customized the 'Opportunity Sales Stage' option set so that the verbiage matches our Pipeline Phases?

2.  Is a workflow required to keep your pipeline phase and sales stage in sync?  It seems strange that you would have to do this and thus causing your OOB 'sales pipeline' report to not function properly.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Ken

RE: CRM 2013 - Sales Pipeline Report and Sales Stages

    Hi Ken,

I can understand why it doesn't seem to make sense. My thought is the Sales Pipeline report was originally designed to function off of a workflow populating the pipeline phase field --this was back in CRM 3.0!  However, since then, the new sales stage field has been added, the dashboard capability has been added, AND now the sales process has been added.

It's likely that the sales pipeline report merely exists for backwards compatibility, and most organizations have replaced it's usefulness with dashboards.  However, it does have the benefit of the weighted revenue calculation.

If you do want to use the report, you will have to have workflow populate the pipeline phase every time the stage changes.  You can also create a weighted revenue field and use workflow to calculate that for your dashboards.
