How-to "disassemble" a product : create two products made from one ?

Hello everyone,
One of my companies' client is into the agroindustry field. They're processing rapeseeds to create oil, biofuel and oilcake. All theses products and by-products are to by sold to different clients.
We are wondering how we could answer to their needs and it's a bit difficult to see where to start. We are considering to use assembly orders with a twist, maybe (we are editors). If someone could give us a leg-up ?

It's a field with lots of sustainability tracking so we'll be looking into the new BC sustainability module.

Thanks
Best regards
Cecilia

Great question — and yes, this is a common requirement in industries where one raw material results in multiple outputs (often called co-products or by-products).

In Business Central, this scenario is typically handled not with Assembly Orders, but with Production Orders and BOMs (Bill of Materials) using co-products and by-products setup.

✅ Recommended Approach: Use Production BOM with Output of Multiple Items

    Business Central’s manufacturing module allows:

    • Main Output: The primary product (e.g., biofuel).
    • Co-Products/By-Products: Secondary products like oilcake or raw oil.

You define these on the Production BOM and link them to the routing. Each output item can be configured with its share of cost (scrap, yield, etc.).

    Customization (If Needed):

    In cases where:

    • You want to "disassemble" items (reverse process),
    • Or you need flexible costing/allocation logic per output,
    • you may need AL code customization to enhance the production journal or output posting logic.

    For example:

    • Auto-post outputs based on yield ratio
    • Integrate sustainability factors with by-products
    • Handle disassembly scenarios not supported natively

➡️ For such requirements, it's best to work with your Microsoft Partner. They can help tailor the solution to match your exact process while keeping it upgrade-safe.

I agree with Sohail. Assembly Order cannot disassemble products. You can study the Manufacturing module of BC first.
Hope the following helps as well.

    Thanks.
