difference between managed and unmanaged solutions.

Posted on by 365

Please help me to understand the difference between managed and unmanaged solutions.

When I export my solution as unmanaged I can easily import it into a new environment.

When I export my solution as managed I get dependency errors stating "The following components are missing in your system and are not included in the solution. Import or create all missing components and then try importing this solution again.". The list of missing components includes components that are already installed by a previous solution.

Questions

1. Why does the managed and unmanaged solution have different dependencies?

2. This was the first solution created so why does it have any dependencies (the solution has very few customisation but has a number of entities with translations and no sub components)?

3. In the managed solution column is a value of Active, What does Active mean? Is this the default solution?

below is the list of dependencies I get when importing the managed solution.

There is no Active Solution. Also why are there dependencies in the managed solution but the unmanaged solution does not have the dependencies?

Check out this article about the differences between them:

All of the solution components that you have belong to the Active solution.
