Is there a way to set the payment method on an expense item so that it cannot be changed? at the moment we have setup default payment method based on expense category, however the field is still editable when entering an expense item in the Expense Management module.

If you do not want to customize code, the only solution is to keep only one Payment method as allowed on Expense category setup:
User is able to edit Payment method field, but won't be able to change it.
The other solution is a customization and disable editing of field.
