Report Writer (Data not visible & how to add fields?)

Two issues -

#1:  On my clients quotes, orders and invoices, the Bill To name is visible, but the address is not being shown.  The Ship to address displays proplerly, and in the report writer view they both seem to be sset up the same.

My second issue is that there are fields that I need to add to the same Forms (Quotes, Orders, Invoices,) that I cannot figure out how to.  The calcualted fields seem to be easy enough to drag and drop.  I want to add method of payment to the forms, but not listed as a calcualted field.  Also wanted to add a few fields in the body from the user defied area (Text fields.)  If anyone can point me in the right direction for some instructions, literature, experience, etc. I would certainly appreciate it.

Many Thanks,

Greg Wartes

     Greg,

The first issue seems odd.  If the address IS setup correctly in Report Writer, my only suggestion is that the address information may be missing for the bill-to (ie no data).

For the second issue; what do you mean by "calculated fields"?  Method of payment is a straight data field based on the user's choice; it doesn't require further calculation, so far as I remember.

If you've not worked with Report Writer very much, it can be pretty confusing.  The toolbox on the left contains all the fields that have already been linked to the report.  At the top of the list is a drop-down box with the other tables you can choose from.  I'd start there to look for the fields you want to add.

If you're looking for a specific field, just let me know, I'd be happy to help.

BTW, Report Writer is one of the most awkward report generators on the market.  Since the product comes with Crystal Reports, you might want to consider creating reports for the client in Crystal, or at least discussing that option with them.

Have a look at this blog page for useful articles and the link for the Report Writer training materials.

Thank you - I do know the specific field.  I am looking to add the 'Payment Type,' as well as 'Project Name,' which is a user defined field.  I am able to locate the fields from within report writer, opening the data type definition window, but am not seeing how to add them to the report because 'Add' is grayed out.?.  Any help would certainly be appreciated.  What am I missing here???

    Thank you,

    Greg,

First off, what tables are the fields in?  Simplest way to define a field is <tablename>.<fieldname>, for example, in Report Writer, you might show Calculated fields.Company City.  That way I know exactly what you're looking at.  Also, if Project Name is a User defined field, it will be called "User Defined 1" or some other number, not "Project Name" if you're looking at a vanilla install of Great Plains.  If you are looking to add custom-developed fields, contact the developer of the custom-developed code; it may not easily play nice with RW.

Second, the only source of data fields that works reliably (for me, anyway) is the fields already in the "Toolbox" which pops up on the left of your window.  If you don't see a small, narrow window called "Toolbox" on your screen, go to Layout>>Toolbox (or hit "CTRL+B").  I can't find the "Data Definition Window" easily; how did you open that?  It sounds familiar, and I think you may be (effectively) trying to add a table; this is a major pain to do with RW.  I can't remember if I've ever had success, though I remember trying several times :(.

    We'll get there.
