Hardware Load Balancing of WCF and SSRS

In order to load balance WCF services and SSRS, while using AX2012, it is recommended to use NLB. One of my client don’t want to use Network based Load Balancing.

Does AX2012 supports Hardware based Load Balancer?

I have seen it built at the Australian railroad company, they had a dedicated hardware running on *nix, which was monitoring whether the AX AOS service was up or not, capable of doing load balancing and a failover in case of a disaster when the service goes down. It was managed by their IT system engineers, so I do not have the exact details on the hardware and software used. *nix systems are quite flexible with handling network packets, but to set it up and maintain it correctly, it is not for the faint hearted.

Using native Windows tools like the NLB is always easier to maintain and for setup.

    Hi Vilmos,

In order to load balance RPC communication we have  AOS cluster already in place, which is distrusting load of RPC client sessions. To this extent we are not worried.

My question is particularly for load balancing of WCF services

I see, for that I have not seen any dedicated hardware deployment in action unfortunately.

Both for our SSRS scale-out deployment, and for our eCommerce portal WCF (custom AIF) calls we are using a network load balancer, as per the article mentioned here with which you are familiar I am sure: community.dynamics.com/.../574143

Maybe the other experts have tried experimental solutions.

Is there any specific reason why you feel NLB is not suitable in your customer's case?

Technically, it should not be an issue, if you use hardware load balancer or Windows NLB. However you have to configure SSRS scale out deployment using Reporting Services manager and by deploying binaries on each node. All hardware load balancers are equally configurable. Depending on the load balancer algorithm, the client requests will be redirected to any of the servers defined in the farm. Which also means that the availability of the Reporting Services server – be it in native mode or SharePoint-integrated – is dependent on the availability of the load balancer regardless of how many servers you have in your farm.
