In that case you need to enable claim based authentication and setup IFD.
The link provided above describes IFD setup.
Setting up claims based authentication can be referred from here :
the application I need my employees to be able to access the same CRM application they do internally and use it externally.
And not sure about IFD
did you check your firewall if they are blocking.

Can you please clarify? Are you talking about the Portal environments or are you talking about the Dynamics CRM application itself? If Dynamics CRM itself do you have IFD configuration setup?
