How do you set up a Dev Environment for a CRM Online Customer?

So I have a client that has 55 users on MS Dynamics CRM Online.

They are looking to develop new capabilities, but are concerned about doing development work in their current production environment.

 What is the standard process for a situation like this from Microsoft? 

 Should they simply sign up for a 30-Day Trial Subscription and import their existing production configuration?  What about production data?

 I have not been able to find anything on this.

    One alternative would be to set up a Dev environment on a Virtual machine using the CRM Server software.  They can then shut down and restart the machines as needed.

    VM is good option. However please not there are difference of feature between VM (On Premise) and Online. So be carefull when you opt VM for online development.

    I think 30-days trial is better option
