Upgrade to CRM 2015 from CRM 2013 but using Windows Server 2008R2 and SQL 2008 R2

Hi All

Just have a question regarding our existing CRM 2013 environment as we begin to plan to move to 2015 or even possibly 2016 depending on when we move... Likely to be in the next 12 months.

I understand that an upgrade from CRM2013 with SP1 to CRM 2015 is possible but am I right in assuming this is only possible if the supported OS and supported SQL is already present on CRM 2013?

Our on premise CRM 2013 is based on Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL server 2008 R2, so I am guessing it wont be supported so would need to do a fresh install.

Before I go to management on this, any advice on this would be most appreciated.

Thanks

    Applies To: CRM 2015 on-prem

Microsoft Dynamics CRM (on-premises) versions require the following software:

A Microsoft Windows Server Active Directory infrastructure

An Internet Information Services (IIS) website

Claims-based security token service (required for Internet-facing deployments)

    Microsoft SQL Server 2012

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services

Microsoft Exchange Server or access to a POP3-compliant email server (required for email tracking)

SharePoint Server (required for document management)

Windows operating system when you use CRM for Outlook. Apple Mac, when running Apple Safari, supported tablet, or mobile device.

Supported web browser, such as later versions of Internet Explorer or the latest versions of Apple Safari, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

    Microsoft Office Outlook (optional).

    Hi Deepesh

I have come across that article in my research, and from that article it seems our environment won't be able to be upgraded because W2k8 and SQL 2008 R2 isn't supported any more.

I just wanted to get that confirmed really from someone who has had this scenario.

Am I right in saying that for 2015, best practise would be to build new instance of a front/back end server based on W2k12 R2 and SQL server based on 2012 R2 and then look at migrating the data from CRM 2013 over to 2015?

    Thank you

Yes,  you should only use the documented versions.

It's a lot easier to upgrade an organisation database than to migrate the data. I would suggest that you build the new servers with the 2012 versions (Windows and SQL), install CRM 2015 on these, then import the organisation database from the Crm 2013 SP1 deployment into the CRM 2015 deployment

Thanks everyone, I completely agree with last comment and that was I was going to do but I wanted to understand all options before I went to my management team. As i know installing servers could be a most costlier option however it makes the most sense and avoids any other conflicts such as performance.
