Idea behind Sales Territories

What is actually the idea behind the Sales Territories you can find under Business Management ?

I can add Sales Manager and Members.

Are there any functionality like:

  1. Auto assignment to lead, account, contact?
  2. Security access?
  3. Why can't I assign a User as member of multiple Sales Territories ?

I can hardly find any documentation regarding this topics. Only AddOn developed by partners.

Sales Territories, to my knowledge, have been completely ignored since CRM 4, and are little more than a way to group people by "territory".

I'd use the Team functionality these days so you get all the extra stuff, especially since a user can't be part of more than one Territory.

Territories were primarily used for reporting eg to show sales per Territory. You could also use them for escalation or notification (email manager of the Territory for things happening in their territory). Can also be used to filter views, especially for dashboards (records owned by any user in the Territory that has manager equals current user).

They now have an additional function in CRM 2015, which is that you can use a Connection to specify a default price list for a territory, then any sales records (Opp, Quote, Order, Invoice) created by a user will use the price list for the territory of that user (by default - if a price list is specified some other way such as mapping from another entity, that wins).

Sales territories are hierarchically related. You can query the related data as a hierarchy, in one step. You’ll be able to query records using the Under and Not Under logic. The "Under" and "Not Under" hierarchical operators are exposed in Advanced Find and the workflow editor.
