Dynamic DNS with RMS HQ Server

Has anyone had any success deploying HQ Server on a dynamic IP using a DDNS Service like no-ip.com or dyn.com?

Static IP addresses are quite expensive in our market ($200 per month for 10Mbps down 2Mbps up), whereas a standard connection with a nominally dymanic IP is both cheaper ($30 per month) and faster (40Mbps down, 5 Mbps up).

I'm not sure if HQ Client can connect to a hostname vs. an IP address... has anyone tried this, or have it running?

I have not tried the configuration you are suggesting and I would imagine it would not work or would require you leaving your networks vulnerable.  The easiest way to accomplish what you are doing is to set up a VPN (virtual private network).  You would need to purchase two identical VPN routers ( I suggest netgear ...a one time purchase of about $100 each).  You then configure these two routers to create a virtual encrypted network across the web.  VPNs are relatively easy to setup and then getting your HQ Client to work would be very easy.  You can use dynamic IP's and a free service like dyndns.com to keep your costs down as well.  I have been running this configuration without issues for over three years.

    Hope this helps

It works great, have a couple of dozen doing this is the US. Our preferred is dyn.com

IP address or names, either works, but we prefer IP addresses for everything.

Thanks Jeff, and Darren too.  Glad to know this would work as it'll save us a bunch of money.

The VPN setup is an interesting idea - I'm googling around on this topic now... just wondering if there are tradeoffs in terms of connection speed/bandwidth via VPN?

I'd guess that network speeds when connected to the VPN would be slower, also I'm wondering if making the VPN secure enough with consumer grade equipment will be a hassle.

My concern is that I'm going to be supporting this; already have a full time job, and don't want another!

No loss of speed with a VPN as long as you do a hardware VPN (do NOT use a software VPN solution).  All VPN traffic is encrypted and secured and does not leave your network open.

Whence setup there is little to no maintenance, the variable here is power outages changing your IP address and your ISP resetting your IP, which it will do because you have a dynamic IP.  In my experience my ISP resets my dynamic IP anywhere from once a year to once a month (have four locations...the more rural location is reset more often).

When your IP address is changed it breaks your dns.  When this happens it is a 2 minute fix to log into dyn.com and reset your dns to the new IP address, then within minutes your VPN will be back up.  This is where a remote desktop software, like logmein.com, is useful or you can train your employee at each location.

    Good luck
