New Grid controls copy journal lines from excel and paste into general journal

Hi

I am currently trying out the new grid control functions in 10.0.11 in a sandbox environment.  I have read that the new fast entry that enables the user to type ahead also theoretically will allow you to paste rows from an excel table into the grid.  This would be useful in the instance where for example a large journal has been prepared in excel and needs to be entered into the system.

I have managed to partially achieve this by first taking an existing general journal and exporting the lines to excel. Then creating a new journal copying the rows from the excel table and from the first column of the first line of the journal entry screen pasting into the grid. This populates the grid with all the rows from the excel workbook which is great.  However some of the columns are always skipped these are the account, offset account Item GST Group and GST group.   I have tried using different browsers and different journals GL and vendor invoice journals but I am always faced with the same issue.

I know we can update journals using the excel add-in but personally having used other ERP applications in the past where pasting from excel could be done with ease it would be a step forward to be able to do this in Dynamics 365 Finance.  Has anyone else had any luck with this or is the functionality not quite there yet given it is still in public preview?

Thanks in advance

 Simon

    Hi Simon

Sure, will update you on the outcome.

In the meanwhile, a couple of things we noticed:

    - With regards to the account coming up as blank, it only works if the existing lines in the journal are equal to the number of lines in the excel. Though it defeats the purpose of creating new lines by just copy pasting from excel, but as a workaround you can try that. For example, if you excel has 3 lines, try creating three blank lines in the general journal, move to the date column in the first line and then try copying from the excel. EDIT: Alternately, copy paste it twice lol. Once it will copy and create the lines but leave the account blank. Then copy paste it again overwriting the same rows, all the existing data will be overwritten and the account information will be updated this time as number of rows in excel and lines will be equal.

    - With regards to the amounts being divided by 1,000; keep the amount column as Text in Excel. It then copies the amount correctly.

    Regards

    Hi Simon

Yes, the 10.0.14 seemed to give more unexpected client errors. Our UAT instance was upgraded to 10.0.14 but our production was stopped due to the DIXF bug. We upgraded both to 10.0.15 yesterday and it seems to a bit more stable now.

Though, the issue with copying the journal lines from excel seemed to appear in both 10.0.14 and 10.0.15. I have a raised a ticket with Microsoft, waiting for their reply.

    Hi Rafay

we are currently on 10.014 so I can't comment on 10.0.15. But in 10.0.14 the new grid controls seem less stable than  10.0.11. Last week I had to disable the new grid controls to fix an issue that the users were experiencing. Each time they opened a grid and clicked into it they would get and unexpected client error message pop-up window. Disabling the new grid controls has resolved this.

    Have you experienced this issue?

    Regards

    Simon

RE: New Grid controls copy journal lines from excel and paste into general journal

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I guess this issue is still not fixed. I recently upgraded to version 10.0.15 and I believe the new grid controls are out of preview.

When I copy paste the lines from excel in a general journal, the accounts and offset accounts are only copied for the first line. For the remaining lines, the account is blank and all other information is copied.

Not only that, the amounts in either debit or credit column seem to be divided by 1,000. So for instance if I put 5,000 in excel and copy paste it, the value copied in the journal will be 5. This only happens when multiple lines are copy pasted.

Please let me know if others are still facing the same issue.

    Thanks Mike

Yes I appreciate this is still in public preview and I will add my suggestions to the ideas page and/or vote on existing suggestions.

    Best regards
