I have a Duplication Detection Rule setup, to remove some duplicated activities that can be created. Is it possible to run this from a workflow or call it from somewhere else to run?

The built in duplicate detection function isn't able to automatically delete records. There really isn't anyway is indicating which record(s) should be kept vs. deleted as a result of the process.

You can schedule duplicate detection jobs to run from the Data Management area but the most this will do is email the results to someone.

With the duplicate detection rule configured, you can schedule this to run. It will find duplicates, but not automatically delete them. This is under Data Management| Duplicate Detection Jobs. Fire a job to run right away and this will show you the duplicates.
