401 Worksheet very slow after customer merge

I have followed Microsoft's method for merging global customers.   I can do the merge on 1 customer, on a hundred or a thousand.   I'm merging ones that haven't made purchases since 2009 into a Purged Customers - customer record, so as to clean up thousands.    We have 170,000 customers and want to reduce to around 80,000    Through merging at least sales reports will show that a purchase was made by the 'Purged Customer' rather than coming up blank.

I know that I could do a delete of customers instead and that this would be quicker, perhaps will need to go this way.

What happens is that the 401 worksheet ends up updating 108,000 + customers every time even when I merge only a couple at the stores.   Don't know why it needs to update so many.    I am doing this in a test environment, riduculous amount of time would be involved to try it on our live stores.   Has to be some better way, this would really take days.    I can run the sql code - which I altered to run on any number of customers at once, but after I do this, the 401 worksheet results in a time-out disconnect after it hits 15 minutes.   Tried setting time-outs to higher in regedit for HQ server and for stores, but still disconnects the manual client connection at 15 minutes.

Thanks for any help on the subject.

Have you tried running a re-index in both HQ/SO Admin, followed by a database check?

If I merge say 100 to 1000 records I can get the worksheet to run through after, but it takes 5 to 7 minutes at each store to do just this many.   My sql code will run in a minute at each store..   Then after it all I do a 601 to remove that batch of merged out global customers in HQ server.   So overall 15 minutes just to clean up 1000 customers.  Not a viable solution.
