Any drawbacks to using variant for colors (i.e. t-shirts)

I have a client that is looking for the best way to setup inventory. Have people had more success with setting up individual items for every color of item such as a t-shirt, or is it better to use variants and only have one item number for the t-shirt? What about for sizes? I have seen where some people have used a UofM for the various sizes, is that a good way to go or any drawbacks?

Thanks,

KJ

For colour and size it is worth looking at pebblestone or ItSuits. Fashion focussed BC verticals. If it is just colour then variants are fine. Less functionality on variants in manufacturing though for now at least.

You can only have one variant code per item. Your option is only to combine size and color into one variant code.

If you are using manufacturing, there is no BOM per variant. BOM is on Item level.

it might be better choice to set up item variant individually this give user more control over costing/planning etc.
If set up under one item, everything is managed as the same under that item card.
