Salesperson ID / Territory ID

I have been using GP for at least three years, and I would like to understand the objective of these two fields.

I am asking because, if I am correct, it can be used in terms of the salesperson and the Territory would be a particular location or state. But when I am putting through a sales transaction and the salesperon id is changed, when I tab the territory id changes as well.

How then will this work if I want to maintain salesperson id 2 in a territory defined as 5?

Salesperson and Territory in GP maintain a 1 to 1 relationship.  Admittedly, very simplistic, it assumes that a salesperson is part of 1 territory at a time and does  not float between territories.

You are correct, a territory is a geographically defined area into which sales are made.  Typically, sales people are assigned to one territory.  These elements are intended to allow sales analysis by territory and sales person.

If you need more flexibility in your scenario, have a look at a product like Ethotech's Advanced Commissions.

Yes, Territory id is used to segregate the Salesperson sales area. So, each of the Salesperson ID has a Territory for them sales area. If you want to set the same Territory to more than one Salesperson, then open the Salesperson Maintenance(Cards-->Sales-->Salesperson) window to setup the information.

    Hope this helps!!!

Nothing more valuable to add up.

A considerable advantage of the SOP module in Dynamics GP is not to manage several business activities which doesn't necessarily have a financial effect.

In a previous Dynamics GP project, the sales director requested this as a business rule validation. Since form a sales perspective, the salesperson is not supposed to distribute goods among two or more territories. This could result with a breach since different territories would have different prices.

That's why the one to one relationship is built in Dynamics GP as derived from such a business need.

Thanks for your responses, but how do I prevent the Territory ID from changing when the Salesperson ID is changed.

We have scenarios where the sales person id is changed in the sales transactions.

Assign the same Territory ID to all the Salesperson's ID. So, while changing the Salesperson ID, it will display Territory ID as same.

    Hope this helps!!!

    Hi,

You can always change the territory back to whatever you want after you change the salesperson.

You can also use VBA to capture the territory value in the before change event of the salesperson ID, and then set the value of the territory field using the after change event of the territory.

    Would this work for you?

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

You can also achieve the same mentioned by Lessie with using Dexterity.

    Hope this helps!!!

So, does the Salesperson ID the same as the territory ID? Under what table(s) can I find the Territory ID?

    Hi Gian,

Territory IDs are in the RM00303 table. Salesperson IDs are in the RM00301 table. Salespersons have to be assigned to a specific territory. It's a required field when you set up a salesperson. On the SOP window you are seeing the 'working as designed' effect of changing salespersons. To prevent it, you would have to customize the window. It's not a difficult customization so it shouldn't be outlandishly expensive. What you have identified is a pain, I think I'll put in the Microsoft wish list.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

I put it on the list, if you'd like to vote for it you can do it here:
