Upgrading from GP 2010 to GP 2018

We are about to embark on upgrading our Dynamics GP 2010.  It's running on Windows Server 2008 with SQL Server 2008.  We have a new Windows Server 2016 machine and SQL Server 2017.

We'd like to request suggestions as to how best we should upgrade and migrate to the new server.  Specifically, should we upgrade all to way to GP 2018 on the existing server, them move it to the new server?  This would involve installing GP 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2018 (I think... details...) on the old server, and perhaps intermediate versions of SQL Server.

Alternatively, we could do all that on the new server...  (In this case, we will have to get down in the weeds and see if we CAN deal with GP 2013, etc. on a new machine already running Windows Server 2016.)

It may be 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other, but looking for suggestions.  One caveat:  We need to keep the production downtime as short as possible.

Suggestions?

    I have an image all set up for this that I use all the time.  All you need is a W2012 R2 server with SQL 2014. Install GP 2013 and upgrade first to GP 2013, Then upgrade to GP 2016 and finally to GP 2018. Make sure you upgrade your forms and report dictionaries at each hop and after the final hop to update the SQL compatibility level to SQL 2017.  Do a test upgrade on the new server. Now GP 2013 will not run on SQL 2017 so it would be best if you can throw together an image. This way once you have tested everything, you shut down for a weekend and upgrade and copy to the final production server. GP 2013, 2016 and 2018 will run on SQL 2014. Any other path will require you to put up multiple images.

    Thanks, Richard... As usual, your experience is valued.  We're going to follow this plan in a test environment, and will no doubt have a follow-up question or two.  Thanks for your help so far.

    The challenge is to match the version of the OS, SQL and GP. Have the system requirements for each version of GP at hand and it should be smooth sailing. Keep an eye on any third-party products. Sometimes their requirements vary from that of GP.

    Thanks Richard, you're correct.....

    Usually when we get these type of questions, I'll recommend trying to upgrade Dynamics GP as far as you can on the current environment (i.e. Windows OS/SQL Server versions), then migrate the GP databases over to a new Windows/SQL environment when required to complete the upgrade.

    Obviously, the system requirements and upgrading hot topics are invaluable in the planning, as we get many cases where these were never looked at and issues arise because of it.

    Richard,

    I'm in a similar situation.  I'm upgrading from GP 10 to GP 2018.  I'll have to check the GP 10 build.

    My issue is I bought a new DGP 2018 Starter kit.  I don't have keys for GP 2013, 2015, and 2016 to do these intermediary hops.  How can I do these hops?

    Thanks.

    You won't need the keys until you get to GP 2018 so you are fine.

    Sir,

    I am investigating upgrading our Dynamics GP 2010.  We are looking to go to 2018.

    Do you recommend we go further or is 2018 a good build to stop at?

    Also, can you confirm the steps for 2018?  Do I need to upgrade our 2010 to 2013 first?  Then to 2016  and then 2018?

    Thank you,

    Will

    This will be a multi-hop upgrade.

    GP 2010->GP 2015

    GP 2015->GP 2016

    GP 2016->GP 18.3

    No sense in stopping at GP 2018, especially if you run payroll. You will also need to upgrade SQL along the way. Do you have a series of images you can use to test the exact upgrade path? Do you have a reseller to assist with this? We do these all the time and already have everything place. You simply get the finished product back.

    Thank you for the quick reply.

    We do not use GP for payroll, so I will not have to worry about it.

    We have identified a reseller and will be speaking with them next week.  If it does not work out, I will reach out to you.

    Please note that GP 2018 does not really exist any more. It is officially GP 18.x with 18.3.1200 being the latest release. Expect a service pack about once a year and released around October.
