Moving SL2011 and Management Reporter 2012 to a new server?

How hard would it be to move our  SL 2011 server  to another server? We are a small group (5 users) and I need to move our 2008R2 Server and SQL 2008 R2 to a 2016 server and SQL 2016. We are only using one server. We are also using Management Reporter 2012 on the same server.

Thanks.

Bill

RE: Moving SL2011 and Management Reporter 2012 to a new server?

    Hello Bill,

I did inquire with the Environment team regarding this issue.

If moving to Server 2016 and SQL 2016 he would have to upgrade both SL2011 and MR2012.  He might as well go with SL2018CU2 and MR 2012CU16.

Also, he would want to make sure that the new server has enough memory. The minimum memory for MR alone would be 48 GB  (32 GB for the MR integration and 16 for the MR services). Since SL and SQL are also on the same server-- probably should start with at least 64GB of memory.

They would have to back up the SL databases and the Management Reporter database then restore on the new server. Install SL and upgrade the databases. Then, install MR2012, create the MR Services and Datamart database. Then run the integration.

Also, depending on the screen customizations and customized reports. He may have to redo some items since we cannot guarantee that they will continue to function in the later version.

In short the 'move' could get somewhat involved.

    Best Regards,

    Hello Bill,

Regarding the moving of the SL db's , normally you restore them from your old server to your new server.

You update the domain table with the new sql server name

Then you go in and run Views

I am assuming that there no username changes and that the new servers will reside on the same domain,

MR is more involved and I've asked an agent from that team to respond to that part of the question.

    Hi Bill and Cherie

Do you want to share the steps for moving MR to another server?   I am in the process of doing an upgrade to SL 2018CU2 and there will be a need to move MR to another server.

As a result, I will appreciate learning from your experiences and what do look for.

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

RE: Moving SL2011 and Management Reporter 2012 to a new server?

It should not be very hard at all, Bill.

You just back up your databases and your application folders(SL\Application)  Install the software on the new server (SQL, Management Reporter, SL) to the same location as you had installed them before, if any SP or hotfixes were installed, they may need re-applied as well.

    Then you restore the DB's

If you are using the exact same server name as before, you shouldn't need to update anything.  If you have a different server name, then the server name will have to be updated in the Domain Table of the SL System database.

Copy over your SL folders over the ones made by the installation

Run DB Maintenance update views(bottom left) and then Synchronize all DB ownership & security

Set up management reporter and then you will have to rebuild the data mart.

That should do it.  You may need to seek assistance, especially with MR since it can be finicky.
