how can you create an assembly bom with two child assembly boms and remove the duplicate items in the child boms

Assy A = Assy B + Assy C

Assy B and Assy C each contain Item D

Assy A requires only one Item D

How do we create a BOM for Assy A using the sub-assemblies of B and C, while removing one Item D

Do not want to change Assy B and Assy C, or create a new BOM

I have the same question (0)

Sorry but if B requires one D and C requires one D, if A uses B and C, that's two D. You must have a new BOM for A because it does not use B and C.

In the world of assembly BOMs A does not equal B + C because of you only wanting 1 D. Your determination to not have another BOM will need relaxing

Technically you have a byproduct of assembling ASSY A - which is 1 Item D.

If this was a production order you can do this.

    BOM For PROD ASSY A

    Item No Qty Notes
ASSY B 1 This is the Assy B that includes one Item D
ASSY C 1 This is Assy C that includes one Item D
ITEM D -1 We return one Item D to inventory as the Byproduct of this assembly

I've never tried this with an ASSY BOM - but it might work.  Try creating an Assembly BOM with -1 of an item, try posting it and see if that item is returned to stock from the Assy.

Robert you are correct, you can do this with a Production BOM as Kim mentioned as well.  I initially had attempted the add a line on the Assembly BOM with a negative quantity without success.  I also tried to use the existing Assembly BOM and add a line on the Assembly order with a negative quantity...no joy.  At this point I am pretty sure the only way to make this work is to use Production BOM.

I will note: You don't need everything to be a Production BOM.  The Assy B and Assy C can both remain as Assembly BOM.

Putting my "developer hat" on - my best guess is it would be pretty "easy" to add a capability to have a negative quantity for by-products on an assembly BOM.  It might end up being a new field or three (like By Product Qty, By Product Item No etc.) and then some code to do an automatic Positive Adjustment when you post the Assembly order.

If I had to guess - this is 4-6 hours for a decent BC developer with experience working with Inventory and Assemblies.  I would think this is easily upgraded when new BC versions come out (ie: Nobody has to spend a lot of time making sure it works).

If it saves you needing to upgrade to Premium its worth it.
