Hi Jason,
The Account is your "Customer" or "Potential Customer" and if you are working on an "Opportunity" to engage in a service or sell a product you would be tying this opportunity to that account. An account can have multiple opportunities that are taking place at a single point in time and relating these all to the account will help you identify the 360 view of the possible sales related to that account.
Contacts are important as well in the Opportunity sales process because these are the actual individuals you are working with at the account. There may be multiple contacts at the account and you might be working with someone in Finance on one type of opportunity for an ERP system sale and another contact in transportation department if you are working on a TMS sale. The contact helps you identify the primary contact you are working with on the opportunity within the account.
Hopefully this helps Jason.
