Handling Mixed Unit Sales (Cases + Bottles) in Decimal Format – Beer Industry

(5) ShareShare

Hi Community,

This query is related to the beer industry, where sales typically happen in cases (e.g., 1 case = 24 bottles). However, there are scenarios where a customer order includes both full cases and individual bottles—for example, 24 cases and 7 bottles.

Currently, the user needs to manually calculate and enter the total quantity in decimal format (e.g., 24.29167) based on the case-to-bottle conversion. This is not only time-consuming but also prone to errors.

Is there any standard functionality in Business Central that allows users to:

Enter quantities in mixed units (e.g., "24 cases + 7 bottles")
Or have the system automatically calculate the decimal equivalent
Or any alternative approach or extension that can simplify this process?
Any suggestions or best practices would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Sumit Singh

    Hello,

Business Central doesn't support mixed-unit entry (like 24 cases + 7 bottles) out of the box, but this can be effectively handled using the Unit of Measure (UOM) setup. You can define Case as the base UOM (e.g., 1 Case = 24 Bottles) and allow users to enter quantities in either unit. However, for mixed entries, a custom extension is the best approach - this can introduce a secondary input field (e.g., cases and bottles) and auto-calculate the total in base units.

Hope this answer will help you!

This could be handled by creating 2 lines on the order, one uses case as UOM, the other bottle. Below is an example.

    Hello,

You can use "Unit Of Measure" Setup defining "Case" as the Base UOM and "Bottle" as an alternate UOM with a conversion rate (e.g., 1 case = 24 bottles).

This allows users to enter quantities in either unit, and the system automatically converts them, eliminating manual decimal calculations.

This could be handled by creating 2 lines on the order—one using Case as the unit of measure and the other using Bottle. This way, users can enter the exact quantities without needing to calculate decimals manually.
