Greetings,

Is there a way to add a unique (text) field on an existing talbe/entity in dynamics 365? In my case, the contact entity.

Regards,

HD

    Hi,

    Thank you for your query.

    You can add an alternate key, which adds an index and acts as a unique key

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/customerengagement/on-premises/developer/define-alternate-keys-entity#:~:text=All%20Dynamics%20365%20Customer%20Engagement,unique%20identifiers%20defined%20as%20GUIDs.&text=This%20alternate%20key%20can%20be,unique%20identity%20for%20your%20records.

    Here are steps:

    • Go to Advanced Settings -> Customization -> Customize this System.
    • Expand Entities -> Contact -> Fields.
    • Create a new field (if you do not have already).
    • Now, click on Keys under Contact entity and create a key based on the column created (or use existing column).

    • Publish.

    Please note, you can add up to 5 Keys at max per entity.

    Another approach is to set Duplicate Detection rules to avoid duplicates (based on a a field or a combination of fields), but it won't force uniqueness:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/set-up-duplicate-detection-rules-keep-data-clean
