Visual Studio 2019 - Manage Local XPP Configurations

Hi, I'm posting this question here because there is no way to post a question on the Visual Studio Developer Community, all the questions there about Dynamics 365 were closed with a link to this forum, and I'm not finding anything elsewhere about these particular settings.

I am trying to use the Dynamics 365 extension in Visual Studio 2019.  I was able to install the Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.Tools.Installer.vsix and I now have the Extensions > Dynamics 365 menu.  However, whenever I try to Create a new project from Finance Operations template, or Continue without code and try to access it, the Dynamics 365 menu, a 'Manage Local XPP Configurations' box opens, with invalid (blank or non-existent item) fields highlighted.

When it originally opens, the 'Folders for reference metadata has the value 'C://ASamplePath//PackagesLocalDirectory' which doesn't exist; I noticed that a 'C://AOSService//PackagesLocalDirectory' folder does exist, so I changed it to that.  Also since 'Folder for your own custom metadata' was blank, I created a root folder 'DP' and selected that.  I'm clueless as to what should be entered for 'Cross reference database server...' (since I am not yet looking to connect to any database server) and 'Application version...'

Visual Studio 2019 - Manage Local XPP Configurations
Hello Andre Arnaud de C..., I've read about the cloud-hosted environment; would I need to pay for D365 and Visual Studio subscriptions as well as Azure? Or would I upload the VHD to an Azure VM? Or do they have an all-in-one cloud dev / test environment solution? I'm looking into all this now but it's a bit confusing to parse all the options... also I'm nervous about work / school account requirements.

    Hi David,

Correct, you can download the VHD, but you can also deploy a cloud hosted environment in an own Azure subscription. With the last option, you don't need to upgrade your laptop.

Visual Studio 2019 - Manage Local XPP Configurations
Hi, thanks to you both.  Working on this further, I found that the Manage Local XPP Configurations box is what comes up if I go to Extensions > Dynamics 365 > Configure Metadata.  I think the issue is that I do not have D365 running on this machine.

I am new to developing. I have VS running on my work PC.  I downloaded Microsoft.Dynamics.Framework.Tools.Installer.vsix from my org's Lifecycle Services and installed in my VS, which added the Finance and Operations project templates.  I guess I figured I could connect to our Finance and Operations environments via Azure DevOps.

I have since read about the commonplace use of one-box VM's for developing, and downloaded the files for a D365F&O VHD from our LCS.  Unfortunately Hyper-V is giving me "not enough memory to start the VM..." so I need to upgrade my RAM.

I personally haven't seen this configuration window before and I have tried to reproduce the error of the box at least but could not. Deploying a Cloud hosted environment or a VHD would be straight forward as the Visual come pre installed with these extensions for D365FO development.

    Hi David,

Where exactly do you have Visual Studio running? If you want to do development, there are pre-configured VMs having more than just Visual Studio and XPP configurations. It e.g. also has some emulators to mimic some Azure services required to run the Dynamics 365 locally on that VM.
