What would happen if number of CAL exceeds the limit?

Let's say the license I have only allow 100 enterprise CALs, but I want to create 110 enterprise users. What would happen in this case? Would I meet a hard stop? or some kinds of warnings? Thanks.

Additional AX client connections will be blocked with an error if you exhaust the concurrent number of licenses allowed and the client will close down. I think you can add as many users as you want, but only the licensed number of connections allowed at the same time.

I have checked my license and user connections are separate from the enterprise users. So you need to have as many enterprise license as named users you have who require that access type, but the number of AX user connections are the ones which will determine how many concurrent sessions of type User can exist.

To be more precise: License information > System tab > Users, Business Connector Users, Enterprise Portal users determine how many of each user type could connect at the same time against any AX AOS in the same cluster. On the Access Licenses tab you have Functional and Enterprise users, which are your named license counts you need to have.

AX2012 will not block concurrent sessions anymore. The sessions in the license are set to 30000. Like Vilmos stated in his second reply you have purchased named users. A batch job is running automatically every week. (should not be deleted as this is part of the license). This job collects the license counts per week. You have to buy additional licenses when you exceed the numbers. So when you have purchased e.g. 100 enterprise users, but did setup 110 users with an enterprise CAL role, you need to purchase additional 10 enterprise users or remove 10 from your system.

You are responsible for running the report related to User license count yourself. Microsoft could ask for the report and historical data.

Hi Andre,

This means that the licenses are more like "Honor licenses" is that correct? even if you have 100 licenses, there wouldn't be a sudden disconnect from the client side of user if overall concurrent licenses reach 110 for example, your license usage though will be reflected on the weekly licensing job. We have a purchase of licenses on the way, but delivery will be delayed by a month or so. We wish to get everything up and running asap

Hi Joshua,

If there is a pending purchase where the delay is not your fault, you can check if it would be OK to assign more users without the correct license temporary. AX is not stopping it, but please check with your partner if you are not violating the license terms.
