Word Template Logo recommendations

Posted on by 1,144

I am working with a customer on Word templates in Dynamics GP and have found that the logo files their marketing department has sent are very large. Are there any recommendations around size, file type, etc around logos that I can pass along to this customer?

    RE: Word Template Logo recommendations

I just completed another logo change exercise for a different customer and came out with some new findings.. Be careful what software / tool you use when resizing the logos.. not all tools work equally well and the first attempt to reduce the size of a logo from its original fairly large size (720x720) with a lot of blank on the top & bottom, down to 25% (180x98 pixels) only reduced slightly the size of the file (even in JPG mode) from 634kb to about 569kb.

Though the size was only 25% of the original logo and was fitting nicely in the Word Templates to replace the old one (which was 177x81 px), it would take significantly more time to print, because every time GP call for the Word Template (any report), it would also load / save the Logo Picture file on the temp folder before producing the final output (using the combination of both).

As you can see from the folder screen capture below, each Word Template printout produces at least 4 files, including the logo that needs to be merged with the final document. Having a large logo file doesn't help with the process speed.. and the end result is a larger Word Document output.. Do that 10 times or more when you print statements for a lot of your customers, and you'll quickly notice the speed difference.

For the second logo reduction, instead of using Microsoft Paint, I used IrfanView which offers way more options when it comes to resizing pictures. I also noticed that PNG usually produces a better quality picture, with less loss than JPEG. Your mileage may vary, but perform a few testings before you just take the first converted file to the production.

    Good luck.

    RE: Word Template Logo recommendations

This is an old thread that was never really answered.. but I just went thru the entire exercise with a customer which had to update the logos on their GP Reports & Word Templates..

GP Report Writer acts very differently from the Word Templates, and if in GP RW the picture size that you define on the Report design matters, in the Word Template, the logo place-holder doesn't matter, because it's driven by the picture size you upload into GP for each company.

So, yes in Word Templates the original picture size you upload has to be considered and needs to be resized with an editor (like Paint !) to fit into the space you want it to use in your document (like Invoices).

My Customer was replacing a logo after a company acquisition and the new logo was bigger in height as the old one. The picture ration on the old one was 3.25 (width / height), much wider than high,  whereas the new logo ad a ration of 1.81, which means it was pushing down the body section in the Word Template and thus the return address would get out of sight and not fit anymore into the transparent opening from the envelopes they were using.

I had to resize the new logo in pixels to the same height that the old was (more or less), to respect the height that was used before and not push down the return address and the body of the invoice, even if that means the logo was getting smaller in width.

    Hope this helps.

PS: the original new logo from their marketing dept went from 2782x1535 all the way down to 199x110. After we had played with several formats (278x154), the PNG turned out to be the best with the less loss in quality after reduction (JPEG has much more loss in quality for same size).

    RE: Word Template Logo recommendations

I have a client who is asking similar questions.  Are there any size restrictions on logos (like in Report Writer)?  Any comments or experience with colored logos instead of black and white?  Typically black and white seem to work better for clarity purposes in Report Writer.  Any feedback is appreciated.  Thanks!!

Are you having problems including their logo in the template?
