Migrating to the Cloud

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello:

From what I understand, there is no migration path from GP to Dynamics 365 for Operations.

So, if a GP user is on high-end module suites such as Manufacturing, what is that user to do if he wants to migrate to a cloud-based system rather than simply a hosted environment?

Thank you!

John

Think of all the money that could be made creating a Dynamics GP on-premise to Dynamics 365 cloud solution or you could call it GP to NAV conversion. Then as soon as you are done with that you could convert that back to Dynamics on-premise.  Better yet, why not just leave well enough alone and return Dynamics GP back to its lead role as the industry's standard ERP solution?

John - Yes, the hope is that, as time passes, migration paths will be made available by Microsoft and / or any ISV with skin in the game.  I believe Mike is talking about private cloud deployment using windows servers (simple hosting, as you put it).

How, Mike?  I have never heard of that.

So. the hope is that there will be a migration path from GP to Dynamics 365 for Operations in the future.  Correct?

    John,

This subject is not a simple one. You are correct, at this moment, there is no "clear path" from Dynamics GP to Dynamics 365 for Operations (Dynamics AX).  I do not imagine this will remain the case, and likely isn't technically the case right now.  Microsoft owns both products, so a customer could prevail upon them to be flexible on pricing for the migration. This is a far more logical reason for Microsoft to discount than "we want a discount please."

Given the path to product unification is clear now, I would be surprised if Microsoft and ISV's with track records in GP don't provide plumbing for migrations to Dynamics 365 (both flavors) as well.

Any other option, like implementing a competitive cloud based product, would be a basic re-implementation scenario.

Finally, there are partners that have disciplines in multiple products, and having the same partner work on both sides of an ETL project could dramatically reduce implementation costs.

I suspect things will get a whole lot clearer as things progress.

Can run on Azure (All the mfg) stuff is dexterity so it can be in the cloud in AWS or Azure.
