Can I pull the first name of an Opportunity Contact in an email template?

Hello!

Trying to put together a quick email template for a user so that he can easily send it out to multiple clients at the same time.  It's not intended to be part of a nurture campaign, rather we just need the ability to select a number of opportunities and then click Send Direct Email from the tool bar and let him pick his template.

Running into an issue where I can only seem to pull the full name of the contact where he specifically only wants the first name to give it a more personal feel.

I've tried both of the options below but it still pulls the Full Name:

{!Opportunity:Contact;Contact:Full Name;Contact:First Name;}

{!Contact:First Name;Opportunity:Contact;}

Any other suggestions as to how to code this to pull just the first name of a contact in an opportunity template?  I haven't tried it yet, and won't have a chance to until later today, but would changing the template to a GLOBAL template allow it to work as is being requested of me?

Thank you,

Chris

    Hi Chris,

    I too had a similar issue.  When building the Opportunity email template I added the Data Field Value of First Name from the Contact Record Type.  This was displayed in the template as {!Contact : First Name;}.  For some bizarre reason it pulls the first name from the Accounts: Primary Contact rather than the actual Contact on the Opportunity.  This was totally counter intuitive.

    I built a work around in the Opportunity entity by creating a new field - Contact First Name.  I then used a workflow to update the field from the Contact Lookup.  This works perfectly but really it should have worked OOTB!

    Hi Pete,

    Thanks for the reply.  Oddly enough, I just built the exact same workflow to update all of our opportunities to put the contact first name in a new field - First Name For Email - and hit submit, went to check my email, and saw your message.

    You're correct, this should really work OOTB.

    After I apply the workflow to all existing opportunities, I'm going to try making it a background workflow that automatically performs the action when an opportunity is created.  Have you tried an approach like this to automate the process?

    Have a good one!

    Hi! I also made the same work-around but I used a Calculated field to automatically retrieve the parent Contact firstname (and e-mailaddress) for use in opportunity mail templates.
