Reordering policy is order and there is stock available on the item, BC still wants to purchase

Hello,

I have the following problem. I have an item with a stock of 5 pieces. The reordering policy is set to order. The 5 pieces would normally not be on stock because the reordering policy is order, but..

when I sell 3 pieces but I always have to buy a full box of 8 pieces at my vendor. I keep 5 on stock afterwards. When I receive f.e. 3 months later another sales order for this item with 2 pieces, BC suggests in the planning proposal to purchase the item again, while I still have 5 on stock....!

If I would do this I would purchase another 8 pieces. Selling just 2. Leaving me with 11 pieces in stock..

Are there settings or possibilties to automatically reserve from stock for items with reordering policy order? I have found that I can do this item per item, but with 4000 items it takes lots and lots of time...

Thank you in advance!

    Hello BrutusG,

Thank you for posting on the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Forum.

From my perspective, I don't think that Order is your correct Reordering Policy.  I would recommend the use of Lot-for-Lot, which alllows for Demand driven planning recommendations but also takes into account Inventory Stock.   The challenge with the Reordering Policy of Order is that it assumes that the Item is always Make-to-Order. The include Inventory Boolean flag on the Item Card (or Stockkeeping Unit Card) is set to FALSE by Default, so the system doesn't consider inventory balance under this Reordering Policy.

I hope this helps provide sufficient guidance.

    Best Regards,

    Tom
