External access to NAV database question

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by

Dear all NAV experts,

We are exploring several options for external customers to get the stock information from NAV database.

Will the following options violate the NAV license? What we need to purchase? Just one sql server user license or need to purchase more NAV user license?

First Option:

Build an external ASP.NET page and read the NAV database stock information

Second Option:

Load the table data into another database

Sincerely,

Mohinani

Directly reading the NAV database is not under the licensing management of NAV, so you can do it without problem. However, the best and more flexible way for integration is using NAV Web Services and calling them from ASP.NET. In this way your impersonated user must be present in NAV, you’re totally independent from the database and you can use NAV business logic and flowfields from your external app.

Hello Stefano, does it mean we just need a sql database user account, for reading the NAV database by ASP.NET or connecting from a BI tool, without other or NAV license required? Besides, there is a multiplexing license term in the NAV Licensing Guide, do you think an external ASP.NET application will be considering to be multiplexing? Thankss

If you’ve SQL Server with license embedded with NAV, you should buy an external user license and use this user to read NAV db. If instead you’ve other SQL Server license types (for server for example) you can directly query the NAV DB with a SQL user you create (with appropriate permissions).

There’s however no control or blocks when querying the NAV DB directly.

you could develope an external asp.net app using published nav web/odata services with a limited user license for access.

another option is the usage of jet reports.

build your own excel analysis using nav odata services.

deveope a .net/asp.net app with direct access to the sql database, clarify license topics with your local ms office.
