Hi,

We are an small company. We are in the process to hire an authorised Microsoft Partner to implement AX 2012 R3 for the Standard Implementation of Financial Management, Supply Chain Management and Basic HR and Payroll Management with an in house server. Our vendor informed us that Currently Microsoft does not issue the AX 2012 R3 Licence so after implementation we have to purchase following licences:

Dynamics 365/AX for Operation Server Qty. 1

Dynamics 365/AX for Operations (Named User) Qty. 2

Dynamics 365/AX for Operations Activity (Named User) Qty. 3

Please confirm the statement of our vendor.

You are also requested to kindly explain whether or not Licence Fee of Microsoft Dynamics 365 will increase in our case, with effect from October 01, 2019.

Microsoft doesn't sell anymore AX2012 licenses. This is because AX2012 is already nearing the end of it's life. Why are you implementing AX2012? Since it's only supported for a few years, you will need to upgrade to D365FO quite soon (mainstream support ends in 2 years and extended support in 4 years).

So, I guess you need to buy D365FO licenses with "dual use" right to use them in AX2012 until you have upgraded to D365FO.

About the pricing changes in October: yes, the pricing and licensing for D365FO users changes a bit in October.

    Hi Stoneage,

I do not know about the licence requirements as stated above however would like to add that if your organisation is in the process of implementing AX 2012 R3 now, perhaps it would be a good idea to go for D365FO instead, as you have only about four years before the AX 2012 R3 goes out of support. My organisation commenced AX 2012 R3 implementation last year, but had to stop the implementation because of this end of support 2021 (mainstream) and 2023 (extended) for AX 2012 R3. We are currently considering D365FO on-premises as an option.

By the way, are you going to have only 5 users? Maybe AX and especially D365FO is overkill for you. Have you looked into D365 Business Central? It?a the cloud edition of Dynamics NAV.

    Lighter, simpler, cheaper

    Hello Stoneage,

If you are in the process of selecting a partner, why don't you ask your local MS representatives for some guidance? Not only for the partner selection but also for the licensing questions that you have ;-) Might be a smart move - getting your licensing questions answered and getting some help with the selection of your partner ;-)

About AX2012: Please see Nikolaos answer. D365FO is the product to go for.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig
