The major difference between Manager and position is business unit. Manager hierarchy deals when you are in same business unit, where position hierarchy deals with different business units.

    Thanks

The other major difference appears to be that Manager tree is provided -- systemuser::Manager lookup field.  Position tree is completely implemented by you via position::Parent Position lookup.  This appears to logically provide another means of controlling depth.

Minor difference is that you don't have to use the quite confusing term "reports" in explaining the relationship.  (Isn't a report a structured view of data rather than a person?  The danger of falling into HR speak.)

Another difference is that Manager hierarchy is based on direct reporting structure only and manager should be exists in the same business unit. Using position hierarchy you can access any user owned  or business unit data , just to make sure user has added in lower position mentioned in the position hierarchy.
