Using Notes to attach a file I get a message that says the maximum file size attachment allowed is 5120K.

Can that be increase? currently testing CRM using the Online trial.

    Yes.

    Go to Settings -> Administration -> System Settings.

    In the email tab, navigate to Set file size limit for attachments. The default value is 5120. You can change that value if necessary.
